Cool autumn morning. Set off 10:40 to cover 275 miles.

Through Frejus tunnel (€51!) but worth it I think as journey would have been much longer and more difficult. On past Turin and down to Genoa. Through mountain range – impressive tunnels and viaducts. Past Genoa through multiple tunnels and viaducts – they seemed to go on for ever! Amazing feats of engineering, I imagine the cost is still on their national debt!

Arrived Deiva Marina 4:50, had got hotter all day, up to 23 degrees. Approach down long winding hill, but otherwise easy, in contrast to some sites we had considered in the book. Pleasant location, site crowded, but we can only stay one night as we must make progress towards Rome.

We may stay longer in some of these places on the return journey.

On your way down I would really advise half a day or day at Lucca. It is my favourite city. It has a complete wall that you can walk around and is very unspoilt. Enjoy.
